TOURIST INFORMATION

Motoring

To hire a car in Mallorca you must be over 21 years of age (though most car hire agents only allow from 25 yrs), hold a full driving licence from your country of residence and have at least two years driving experience. Always ask the total price before you sign the agreement so that you are fully aware that there are no hidden extras.

You will soon get used to driving on the ‘wrong’ side of road. Remember that the centre lines must always be on the drivers side (just as it is at home). Overtaking on the inside is commonplace and watch out for mopeds who weave in and out of the traffic.

Speed limits are clearly indicated on most roads in built-up areas and on motorways the limit is 120 km/ph.

Many Mallorcan filling stations are not self-service. If they are not, then just hand your keys to the attendant and order your fuel in specific amounts, i.e.10€, 15€, 20€ etc. If you want your tank filled fully then all you have to say is: lleno (pronounced 'Yenno'). If you're filling up at night most filling stations now require you to pay at the kiosk before filling up. You should also switch off your lights. Some filling stations do, however, close at night, on Sundays, and Fiestas.

The police are hot on motoring offences over here so be warned. There are 'on the spot' fines and if you don't have the money on you to pay there and then, you'll be taken to the nearest Guardia head-quarters to make arrangements for payment.

Parking

In most towns car parking is free, but check the signs and also for yellow road markings which indicate no, or restricted parking. If you park illegally your car will be towed away and in its place on the pavement will be a sticker telling you who to phone in order to get it back. Expect to pay around 120 euros. You have been warned...
Peguera's car parks are marked on the Local Map.
If you're visiting Palma, there are plenty of underground car parks. The cost is 1.15 euros for the first hour, and then 30 centimos per 15 minutes thereafter. There are also plenty of Pay & Display meters - the maximum period of stay in metered areas is two hours. However, it's free between 2pm and 4.30pm and after 8pm

Restricted Parking Sign

Look out for these parking signs between 1st April-31st October. To park during the restricted times, you must display your time of arrival in the pavement side of your windscreen. You have one and a half hours free parking. Failure to display your arrival time will result in a fine.

Restricted Times
Mon-Fri: 9.30am-1.30pm and 4pm-8pm
Sat:9.30am- 1pm

Scooter & Moped Hire

For all vehicles over 50cc a valid driving licence is required. You will also need to produce your passport for insurance registration purposes. Helmets are supplied by the hire company and are usually included in the price. They must be worn!

Useful Traffic Laws to Remember

  • The breathalyser limit is less than half of that in the UK! The best advice is not to drink at all if you have to drive.
  • Hand held mobile phones must not be used when driving.
  • When refuelling switch off the engine, radio, lights and mobile phones.
  • High visibility jackets must be worn when drivers get out of the vehicle on a main road.
  • All cars must carry 2 reflective triangles for use in case of a breakdown.
  • Motorists must give way to cyclists.
  • Cyclists are subject to the same breathalyser limit as drivers.
