Warnings

We offer these warnings to highlight local issues that you may not be used to at home, though we feel it's also important to point out that crime in Mallorca is certainly no worse than in the UK or Ireland. Use common sense to safeguard yourself and your posessions just as you would at home.

If you go into Palma, notably around the Cathedral area, or the backstreets, you may encounter gypsy flower sellers, normally in pairs. They offer Carnations for sale for just a few centimos, but these people are professional pick pockets. Do not enter into conversation with them, just walk away. There is also a risk of general pickpockets just as in any major city. These people are so slick they can take a purse or wallet from your bag or pocket without you even realising it. Stay aware and use common sense precautions and you'll be able to enjoy this beautiful city without any problems.

The Asian flower sellers who come into bars selling roses are safe to purchase from, they are just trying to earn a living. The Senegalese guys who go into bars selling watches and other products are also safe to buy from. Some of them are quite entertaining, and there is nothing to beat a good bartering session - they love it. Most of the products they sell are good value - but remember, as always your get what you pay for - nothing comes with a guarantee!!

The beach vendors offering fruit when you are baking in the sun can be very tempting. By all means buy from them, but two things to remember (a) they have no health certificates for their products and (b) you can buy two or three melons for what they charge you for a slice!

The Senegalese guys selling watches, sunglasses etc are OK to buy from but obviously there are no guarantees with their products, though most tend to be good value. Some of them are quite entertaining and there is nothing to beat a good bartering session - they love it.

Unfortunately you should also be wary of people offering to help you, especially at Cash Points or to help you change a tyre on your car. Take care in crowded areas such as market places or tourist attractions as these can be a bag snatchers paradise.
